A wedding at the top of Aspen Mountain begins with a gondola ride from the edge of town and ends, hours later, with the last ride down and the lights of Aspen below. Everything in between happens at 11,212 feet, with the Elk Mountains on every side, and all of it is run by The Little Nell.
Couples often ask us about “the Sundeck wedding,” but a mountaintop wedding with The Little Nell can use three different spaces, and how you combine them shapes the whole day. We have planned weddings, welcome parties, and milestone celebrations up there for years, so this is one of the first conversations we have with couples considering it.
Three Spaces at the Top of the Mountain
The Wedding Deck is the ceremony site in summer and fall, an open-air deck with the peaks behind the couple. During ski season, which runs well into spring, ceremonies move to the Wedding Overlook or the Sundeck patio. There is a bridal suite at the top for getting ready and for a quiet moment before the ceremony.
The Aspen Mountain Club is usually a private club, but The Little Nell opens it for private events. It has a patio with long views down the valley and works beautifully for a cocktail reception or a welcome party. It can seat a dinner, but guests end up split between rooms, so most couples who want everyone together choose the Sundeck instead.
The Sundeck is the largest of the three: a timber-and-stone lodge with a towering rock fireplace, high ceilings, and windows facing the mountains. Most of our larger mountaintop receptions have been here.
We do not lead with published capacities, because the right guest count depends on what you want the evening to feel like. A seated dinner, a cocktail-style party where guests need room to move and find a seat, and a reception with a big dance floor all fit very differently in the same room. We look at your guest list and priorities first, then plan the layout around them.
Weddings and Events We Have Planned on Aspen Mountain
Meredith and JD brought 300 guests up the mountain for a big Southern celebration. Clouds of baby’s breath and white roses lined the ceremony aisle, and the reception at the Sundeck was cocktail style, with lounge seating and custom bars so a crowd that size could keep moving. White drapery softened the timber, and a canopy of greenery and blush blooms hung around a disco ball over the dance floor.

Natalie and Tyler chose black tie for 160. We arranged their first look at the summit, then tucked the wedding party into the wine cellar while guests rode up. Drapery went in the night before, and hot pink, orange, and purple florals gave the room a confident, saturated look against the mountains outside.

Aline and Colin wanted color and play. Their 200 guests found loose florals in peach, mauve, berry, and lavender, a cocktail-style reception, and games woven through the night, including a round of musical chairs.

The mountain works beyond the wedding day, too. Addy and Nick held their welcome party at the Aspen Mountain Club, with early fall color on the slopes and Aspen Beer Burro donkeys making the rounds, the night before their wedding at Hotel Jerome.

One December, we hosted a Viking dinner at the Sundeck for a joint birthday celebration, with tables named for Norse gods, fur throws on the chairs, and a gondola and snowcat load-in.

Other celebrations at the top have included Jeff’s 60th birthday party on Aspen Mountain and Meredith and Jason’s lunch and activities at the Sundeck to open their wedding weekend.
Planning Around the Gondola
Nothing reaches the top without the gondola, including the florals, the band, and every guest. We build the schedule around it: vendors load in early, the wedding party goes up ahead of guests, and arrivals are staggered so no one waits in a long line in formal wear. The ride down at the end of the night gets the same care, because it is the last thing guests remember.
Weather at 11,212 feet can change within the hour, so every outdoor ceremony we plan there has an indoor alternative ready. We also keep water within easy reach all day, since the altitude catches up with guests who flew in that week.
Is a Little Nell Mountaintop Wedding Right for You?
It suits couples who want the mountains to be the centerpiece and are comfortable with a day built around the gondola. If you love the views but want guests to walk from their hotel, an in-town venue such as Hotel Jerome, with Aspen Mountain rising above its courtyard, may be the better fit. We walk every couple through those tradeoffs before they commit to a date.
